Five Lessons

Ben Hogan's name would be on any list of the world's greatest players. He was considered by his peers to be the finest striker of the ball who ever lived, indeed "the unreachable ideal."Picture In 1953, he played in six tournaments, and won five. Three of the five were majors; the U.S. Open, the Masters, and the British Open. That year he might have become the only professional ever to win the modern Grand Slam, but for the fact that the PGA Championship, was held the same week as the British Open. And this from a man who had difficulty walking the fairways for four days in a row because of a severe automobile accident in 1949.

Unlike many who had come before, Hogan didn't start out with a great golf swing. He had a bad tendency to pull-hook his shots, and labored many years before winning. With his vast intelligence (an estimated IQ over 180) and unparalleled dedication to practice, he dug out the fundamentals of a highly effective and repeatable golf swing that he used to dominate the game. These fundamentals are what he lays out for us so clearly Picturein his book. Richly illustrated by Anthony Ravielli, the book first tells you, then shows you, and then recommends motions, and practice drills to instill the proper feelings.

If you are tempted to ask, can you really learn a good swing from a book, consider Larry Nelson, a very successful  professional, and multiple winner of the U.S. Open. He took Hogan's book to the driving range at age 20, and joined the tour four years later. Larry says that he made some modifications to the Hogan swing, but credits the book for his success as a player.

Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf is considered by many professional players, and teachers to be the
"bible" of the golf swing. Originally released in 1957, it was re-released in 1985 due to popular demand, and continues to sell well throughout the world. Interestingly, Mr. Hogan, who had 28 years to think over what he had originally written, didn't change a word for the new release. Five Lessons is very cogent, easy to understand, and useful. It is one of Golf Magazine's Top 100 Pros' Top Three. We recommend Five Lessons for every serious student of the golf swing.
