Golfing, long considered a sport limited to the rich, white male, has captured the attention of people around the world mostly due to one person: Tiger Woods. He is the first minority player to win the PGA championships as well as many other golfing titles. He didn’t just win them though, he destroyed the competition multiple times. Talent only got him so far, it was practice that turned him into a world renowned athlete with one of the biggest sports salaries in the world.

Tiger Woods revolutionized the sport because he showed the world that with enough patience and practice anyone can succeed in what they love. He did have quite a few advantages though. His father was an avid golfer who taught him everything he knew and gave him access the course. Getting access the links is one of the most difficult parts for poor minorities and getting the golf clubs isn’t easy either.

About the only affordable golf equipment is the golf ball. An enterprising young golfer can retrieve a seasons worth of golf balls with a snorkel and mask diving in the water hazards after the course is closed. Many junior golf programs are sponsored by Tiger Woods to help eliminate the high costs associated with golfing as well as teaching a proper golf swing and other golf tips.

Golfing takes thousands of hours of practice to become a professional, but with an accurate golf handicap beginner and professional can play together on the same holes and end up with a comparable score. The lower the handicap the better the player is, the number is merely taken off the total at the end of the game. A professional has no handicap while beginners have high handicaps.

Once the swing has been mastered on the driving ranges its time to start playing on the course. A golf bag is essential for toting all the necessary clubs, extra balls and other golf equipment. One of the final pieces of a complete golf set are golfing shoes. These have small spikes embedded into the bottom which aid the golfer’s stance when driving as well as traversing the course from one hole to the next.

One thing is for certain in golf, practice makes perfect, but even with a perfect score you are still exactly where you started. It is the journey and the challenge that has made golf popular to so many people around the world.
